A clever friend today suggested I explore the idea of counting your blessings before sleeping or when waking in the morning.
I said “Oh yes, I call that the Thank You Game”. Abraham Hicks calls it A Rampage of Appreciation and Peggy McColl calls it a Gratitude Journal (written version).
The idea is that you can shift your current state of mind by pulling yourself into a more elevated and appreciative one, by thinking of all the good things in your life that you have to be grateful for.
The second benefit is that you draw to yourself more of what you focus on. The more you are thankful for, the more you get. What a great principle to fully grasp and utilize.
Examples of Blessings to Count
If your first thought is that you can’t think of anything to be grateful for, then stop right there. That means you’re not trying hard enough. You are reading this – so you can be thankful to see.
1. There is light where you are now, so say thank you for light.
2. You are breathing. Thank you.
3. You have your faculties as you are thinking. Thank you.
4. You are a recipient of the good I am sending you – no question. Thank you.
5. Think of your body and all its amazing working parts.
Just start, and you will see how you can never run out of things to be thankful for.
If you do this, it will lift you out of a funk. (I just looked that word up and it refers to a state of fear or panic).
Start Counting Your Blessings
Today you can begin with just 5. Tomorrow you can go to 6 and so on.
Thank you, Universe, for:
- My breath that gives me life
- My body that carries me about
- My mind that shows me clever things
- My heart that gives and receives love
- My eyes that allow me to see beauty
These may seem too simple words, but the simplest things are often the most profound. We have all seen how dim witted we are capable of being when we don’t get hold of the simplest things first.
Build a foundation on simple principles like these, and you can’t go wrong. I guarantee your life will be better for it. And I never guarantee anything unless it’s true 🙂
